Boyko Vassilev

Boyko Vassilev, born on 09.01.1970 in the town of Pernik, is a journalist at the Bulgarian National Television; producer and presenter of the weekly political survey “Panorama”. Vassilev has covered some of the wars on the Balkans and became an expert in Southeastern Europe; he is an author of more than 30 TV documentaries and interviewed numerous world leaders like Bush, Blair, Schroeder, Aznar, Walesa, Erdogan, Havel – and intellectuals, such as Umberto Eco, David Lynch etc. For his journalistic activities Boyko Vassilev received several Bulgarian and international awards, like “Person of the year in media for Central and Eastern Europe” (Sarajevo, 2016), the Golden Riton for TV documentary (in Plovdiv) and the special award of Sarajevo TV festival in 2000. He has been honored with La Cruz de Oficial del Mérito Civil medal of King of Spain (2016) and BENE MERITO medal of Foreign Ministry of Poland (2012).

Boyko Vassilev started early in journalism, working for “Pogled” weekly, National Radio, students’ TV programme Coo-Coo and the prime-time news of the National Television. His educational background includes the 91st German Language High School in Sofia, the Journalism Department of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridsky”, courses at Heidelberg, Hamburg and Cardiff – and Ph.D. in sociology with the topic “New Media in the Utopian Perspective” (released also as a book). Part of his social engagement includes the vice-president’s position of St. St. Cyril and Methodius International Foundation and membership of the Board of the Institute for Regional and International Studies in Sofia (IRIS). Vassilev writes articles for Bulgarian and international publications. He is fluent in English, German, Russian, Spanish, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and understands French.
